We offer sending of SMS through dial-up modem entry. This is a service normally used to send operational messages and the likes from factory plants, automated buildings, processing plants and other installations. Messages are sent from a computer with a modem or from alarm senders like Googol or Sintel 9. Our solution is a permanent service that was launched autumn 2001 as a response to Telenor and Netcoms shut down of their modem entries for SMS. The most important difference between our modem entry and Telenor and Netcoms modem entries, is that our modem entry is only available for registered and paying customers, while Telenor and Netcoms modem entries were available for anonymous users and there was no need for any agreements to use the service.
Status for Telenor and Netcoms modem entry services:
- Telenor Mobile shut down their personal pager service 1. September 2001
- Telenor Mobile shut down their service for SMS sending through modem dial-up for the numbers 90002199 (interactive protocol) and 90002198 (UCP-protocol) December 2001
- Netcom shut down their modem entry January 2002 (Modem number: 92000890)
Price To use our modem entry you need a user account on our main service, the SMS Gateway, so that messages are charged the customer with a fixed price (see our SMS Gateway pricelist). In addition we charge once a year a monthly fee of 18 EUR each month (165 NOK for Norwegian customers) for access to the modem entry, that covers lines, technical support and 24 hour surveillance. This is to secure the quality of the service, which is vital when it comes to alarms and other important messages. This is also including the basic EUR 6 monthly fee of the SMS Gateway account.
Protocols Our gateway supports two protocols:
- UCP (Operation 01, 30 and 51) which is the same protocol that Telenor Mobile used on their SMS modem entry, and personal paging on number 96890060
- "MODEM" which is a protocol used by the software PSWinCom Professional
Identification Since our entry is for registered users only, it is necessary that the user (sender) identifies himself. This can be done in two ways:
- By submitting username and password that is given when establishing an account. Se next section for how this is done.
- We can detect the telephone number that is calling (A-number transmission), can couple the call to the customer without use of username or password. To do this, the customer must submit to us the telephone numbers that will be used to call from.
Placing of username and password If username and password are used for identification, this can be indicated in two ways when using the UCP-protocol:
- Username and password is placed first in each text message that is sent. Username is from the first character in the text, password from the ninth character, and ordinary text message that is to be sent to a GSM phone starts at character number 20. (Username and password is removed from the message before the it is sent to a GSM phone.)
- Username is placed in OAdC-field in the UCP protocol ("Sender"), and password in the AC-field ("authentication code") in the UCP protocol.
When using the "MODEM" protocol (PSWinCom Professional), there are dedicated fields for username and password.
Telephone numbers etc. The telephone number to our modem entry is given when you order. The modem entry has 6 lines that can receive up to 100 messages from each call. The messages normally reach the receivers GSM phone within 20 seconds from when they are received at our modem entry. The messages are dispatched from our service the PSWinCom SMS Gateway.
Use of profiles "Profiles" can be used to route operational messages to the one on duty, and to send the same message to other receivers. Messages can then be sent through the modem entry both to mobile phones (SMS), and as a email. Profiles can be stated and changed from a website or as command messages through the modem entry. See https://secure.pswin.com/pswincom/nor/profiles/index.asp for more info about profiles.
Guarantee We guarantee that we will uphold our modem entry service as long as we have at least 1 customer that uses it. As of today there are several hundred enterprises using the service. For us the service is a source of income and is operated as such, in contrast to Telenor Mobile and Netcom that operated their modem entries as an item of expenditure and problem generator due to abuse from anonymous users. We have operated modem entries and online services since 1993. Our systems are stable and we have high uptime on our services.
